Frequently in the media space people began to talk about girls on motorcycles – the number of motorcycle enthusiasts has grown significantly in recent years, more and more girls are starting to get into motorcycles, motorsport and motorcycle racing. They travel around the city by private transport, go on long-distance trips, and work as couriers in delivery. Riding a motorcycle is considered something dangerous, which by default becomes synonymous with the word "male". In principle, there are more male bikers than women, but this does not mean that you will never be able to meet a girl on a bike.

We asked our friends why they like to ride a bike, and they were happy to share their stories.

"What's the thrill of riding a bike? Freedom, "wind in the hair" and speed. You are not just watching the world through the windshield, but you are “inside” this very world: you  feel the sun, rain, wind – the entire weather spectrum –  with you whole body. Isn’t it great?

A motorcycle is a more convenient means of transportation in the city, because you are not constrained by your transport sizes. But the real freedom can only be found outside the myriad of stone walls.

A bike is an outlet and a way to relax or calm down after a hard day."

"When I was a kid, my grandfather used to take me for a ride on his old Jawa. He was an experienced biker at the time, and even at the age of 70 he could not give up his hobby. I remember that adrenaline tearing me from the inside, the feeling of speed, the fear of falling down to the road… When I was young I didn’t even think about such a big danger – yes, I was afraid of falling and dying, but the feeling of happiness was stronger than fear.

Grandpa introduced me to his biker gang, the ones who were still alive, if you'll excuse my humor. They were all cool guys, very sincere and brave, they told tales about their adventures and competitions with the neighboring village. I still remember one female rider from this company, Natalia.

She was a Valkyrie herself, as if she had stepped from the pages of a Poetic Edda: she had a long gray braid, strands decorated with beads, a black leather jacket, and she herself was bold and fearless. In front of me was not just a sixty-five years old woman, but a young and lively little girl. Her laughter was infectious, her jokes were sparkling, and she told stories with such detail that the hair stood on end. I guess it was from her that I took some traits - a love for leather jackets, a habit of weaving beads into my hair and strength to defend my opinion to the last. When I grew up, I became what I wanted to be – a girl rider."

"I wanted to ride a bike because of the anime. When I was 15, I watched “Akira”, and I was so inspired by it! I immediately told my parents that as soon as I could, I would get a bike license. They were against it, but I wasn't going to give up on my dream, and as soon as I turned 18, I successfully passed my driver's exam. I borrowed a motorcycle from my friend, and happily rode it alone and with a friend. A few years later I got my own personal bike, and I'm incredibly glad I did what I wanted all those years!

I think it's no longer unusual to see a girl on a motorcycle on the road. In principle, it is difficult to surprise a modern person with something, even extraordinary. Car drivers and motorcyclists treat me calmly: if I need help, they help – to lift the bike or to assist in fixing something if it breaks. There are kind people around."

"I started riding on a bet. My ex-boyfriend said that a biker girl is the same as a car mechanic girl: if there is such a thing, then she obviously does not know how to do anything, and in general it is "not a woman's business" to ride a motorcycle. I set a condition: if I learn to ride a bike in a month, he gives me a hundred dollars and stops following stereotypes. I won the wager, took the money and broke up with him – I saw a rot in him just at the start of our bet. After a while I bought my own motorcycle and still happily ride it now.

Girls riding a motorcycle are no different from men. It all depends on the character and behavior on the road – someone prefers to drive at high speed, and someone chooses caution. Don't think in stereotypes, eat porridge and don't drive at high speeds on rainy days!"

"I got on a motorcycle because of work. I worked as a courier for several years, and I needed something more nimble and maneuverable than a car in order not to stand in traffic jams for two hours. I prefer not to call myself a "female motorcyclist," I just ride my beloved Honda, delivering orders to people and making them a little happier."

"I started my path as a motorcyclist with a great love for a biker. I really wanted to get his attention, but I was terrified to hop on the bike myself. My friend got tired of listening to my loving sighs, and she advised me to ask him to take me for a ride. Well, I thought, I guess, I didn't have any other options. And so I became his passenger girl, and then a beloved wife. After the wedding, I decided to get behind the wheel of a motorcycle myself, we went on vacation on our “iron horses”, we visited Sochi, Moscow, St. Petersburg and encountered many cool people on the trip, and then I met a girl who later became our child's godmother. That's how my desire to attract a guy's attention changed my life."

"I wanted to travel! I was 19 years old, my blood was boiling, I was in need of adrenaline. My friend introduced me to a group of bikers, I asked to join them, they agreed, and that’s how I became a female passenger. We probably traveled through the entire Moscow region. The girls and the boys in this group are very kind to me, they always make sure that I don't accidentally fall off the bike, and even wanted to rent a motorcycle with a cradle to put me there! I laughed and refused such an interesting offer, after all, it seems to me that in the cradle I will not get that amount of feelings that I have while holding onto some shy guy’s body. ;)

Soon we will go to conquer the “northern capital” of Russia: St. Petersburg, wait for us! If you see a singing girl on a motorcycle from behind, know that it's me!"

“A conversation with a woman on a plane that convinced me to try riding a motorcycle. We were both flying to India, me to relax and experience the culture of that exotic country, and she for a motorcycle tour. She described everything so vividly: a journey to the mountains, wild nature, fairy-tale lakes, that I was truly inspired. Immediately after returning from my vacation, I started reading forums, finding out what preparation was needed to go on a motorcycle trip. I got my driving license, spent several years honing my riding skills, and here and there I was in Nepal! Even with all the preparation, it was still challenging, but I managed! And I’ll go again next year. Thank you to that woman-passenger for introducing me to such an awesome hobby. Thanks to her, I’ve seen the world from a different perspective, and I plan to explore many more countries.”

😊 Inna, 47 years old

I just got bored one day, and decided to go to driver’s school. I passed exams for almost all categories, and I’ve been behind the wheel of everything from cars to trucks. But I decided to stick with a bike; the speed and maneuverability just seemed more appealing to me than a lumbering heavy-weight. Being a female motorcyclist isn’t always easy. My family and friends roll their eyes when I talk about my desire to ride a ‘two-wheeled coffin’. I’m used to getting messages from them about another motorcycle accident – it doesn’t scare me anymore. I ride very carefully, I don’t break traffic rules, and I don’t speed. Unfortunately, I did once run into an inadequate person who tried to ram me, and I had to speed up to protect my life. I also often ride with my friend, so we’re shattering stereotypes: I’m the girl driver, and she’s the girl on the back of the bike. We love seeing the surprised looks on young boys’ faces when they find out that “at our age” we ride motorcycles. And when I tell them that I also participate in motorcycle racing, they’re usually left speechless!

As you can see, each woman had her own reason for getting behind the wheel of a motorcycle or becoming a passenger: some are captivated by speed, others are driven by a thirst for adventure, and for some, it was simply that they felt incredibly bored one day.

A woman riding a motorcycle is a symbol of freedom, courage, and independence. Women are proving that they can be on equal footing with men in the motorcycle world and achieve success in this field. Modern women are free to choose activities that they enjoy. In recent years, there’s been a growing interest in female motorcycle touring. Women are embarking on motorcycle journeys to see new countries and experience local cultures.
