Here are the Khongoryn Els - the largest sand dunes in the world, which can reach a height of 200 m. The Himalayas are responsible for the existence of 1,300,000 km² of desert land. Cloud masses coming from the south cannot pass over the high peaks. If you remove the peaks, the climate in the place of modern Gobi would resemble the Mediterranean one.

Unique agriculture

The climate in the Himalayas is harsh. There is almost no rain, and positive temperatures last only during the day. However, local residents grow potatoes, cereals and rice on special terraces. Residents plant special Bhutanese red rice that tolerates difficult conditions.

Complex political structure

The Himalayas occupy more than 1 million square kilometers. They are home to several countries: India, Nepal, Pakistan, Bhutan, Myanmar and Xizang, an autonomous region of China. In 2019, Kami Rita Sherpa reached the top for the 24th time. It was a world record. What makes this record even more amazing is the fact that Kami Rita Sherpa's ascended to the top twice a week. The extraordinary abilities of the Sherpas have interested geneticists. They turned out that Sherpas have genetically inherited metabolic features. Instead of burning fat, their bodies use sugar. And this is an effective low-oxygen process. The oxygen consumption of the Sherpa body is 50-60% of the normal consumption level.

Culture and religion

The Himalayas are considered the center of many different faiths and the abode of gods by Hindus. The Ganges River begins here. Pilgrims regularly visit the source of the river in Uttarakhand. It is also a habitat for many rare animals: 7 species of endemic birds, snow leopards, bharal, also called the blue sheep, Asiatic black bear. Indian yogis visited the valley for meditation.

In fact, scientists have recognized the Himalayas as a global biodiversity hotspot. Many local species of plants and animals are found nowhere else. All climate zones and types of ecosystems are represented here: Subtropical and Temperate Forests, Alpine Forests and Meadows, Alpine Desert and Tundra, Riverine and Wetland Ecosystems, Glacial Regions.

Legends and Myths

Almost all the Himalayan peaks have their own romantic history. The guardian deity of all the mountains is Himavat. Himavat is the father of Ganga, the river goddess, and he is also the father of Parvati, the consort of Shiva. Parvati long sought the love of Shiva, she lived on Mount Kailash, which today attracts many pilgrims and tourists. The height of Mount Kailash is still a subject of debate - according to scientists, it is 6638 m, but a more demonic figure is often found - 6666 m. Parvati failed to get Shiva's love, because he was busy with spiritual growth. Only after Parvati became deeply pious and passed Shiva's test, he took her as his wife. They had children: the god of wisdom Ganesha and the god of war Skanda.

One of the largest in the world is also the Greenland ice sheet. In the Himalayas, between India and Pakistan, lies the Siachen Glacier. This is the second largest glacier in the world outside Antarctica after the Fedchenko Glacier. The area of the Siachen Glacier is more than 1000 square kilometers. "Sia" in the Balti language refers to the rose family plant that grows widely in the region. "Chen" refers to abundance. Thus the name Siachen means a place with an abundance of roses.

The Mekong, Salween, Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers also begin in the mountains. These rivers provide water to millions of people across Asia and beyond.

When the Mountains Were the Sea

On the slopes of Everest, scientists find the remains of ancient marine animals. Many finds were discovered in the Spiti Valley. The date of these finds is 540 million years ago. The most interesting villages for paleontologists are: Mud, Komich, Langza, Lalung and Hikkim. India was once part of Gondwana, a continent lying across the Tethys Sea from Laurasia. A hundred years after the start of continental drift, the two continents collided with such force that the edges of the plates crumpled and formed the Himalayas we know today. It is a paradoxical fact, but due to this origin, despite its size, the Himalayas are the youngest mountain range on Earth. The mountains continue to grow, adding from several millimeters to a few centimeters per year.

The highest post office

In the village of Hikkim in a state of Northern India there is a unique post office. This is the highest post office in the world. The village is located at an altitude of 4,724 m above sea level. The record is included in the Guinness Book of Records. Hikkim Post Office sends 15-20 letters a day and keeps deposits of about 50 people. The Post Office closes during heavy snowfalls - for 6 months a year. The village of Hikkim also attracts tourists with numerous Buddhist monasteries. The oldest continuous monastery is Tabo Monastery. The Great Dalai Lama calls this monastery the holiest place in the world.
